Competency -9 Internet

www.clutsy.com

NMRLS-Resources for Public Library Directors

I found this helpful website by searching www.clutsy.com for “public library directors”. I tried a couple of searches and found the results did not really reflect managing libraries and that the search engine seemed to be focusing too much on public library and not the additional search terms.

That being said I did find a site that provided a forum for discussion and helpful information for library directors. NMRLS (Northeastern Massachusetts Regional Library System) provides a wealth of library management information, including a discussion list, a professional collection, how to run board meetings, workshops and more, on its Resources for Public Library Directors page located at http://www.nmrls.org/directors/resources_directors.shtml

Competency 8- Multimedia

Seen here is the organization chart for the Boise Public Library. The use of an organization chart allows staff and management to easily determine their direct line managers and reports. This chart is from the Boise Public Library and available at http://www.cityofboise.org/BudgetOffice/FY04FY05/Departments/OrgCharts/Library_files/Library_frames.htm

Competency 7- Social Networking - MySpace

Social Networking

My Space

I searched MySpace for ‘library staff management’ and found a profile that fits my needs perfectly. PALINET's MySpace page can be located at http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=74934533.

The title is “PALINET”. This profile is for a member owned and operated regional Library Network that provides training through its classroom and online education events. They offer discounts on library services and the provide OCLC services to their region. The blog advertises information on upcoming workshops that feature information on all areas of library service and management. It’s set up in a humorous way because PALINET is Library Network and not a real person, but it shows PALINET as being single and 71 years old.

I chose this site because it would be useful to library managers by providing information about staff training and giving them insight into new trends that they may want to add to their training repertoire.

Competencies 6- LexisNexis- Successive Fractions

LexisNexis

Successive Fractions

I chose to use LexisNexis for a successive fractions search. I chose the “power search’ and “natural language”.

I used the keyword of ‘management’ for my first search resulting in the 993 hits as depicted in the screen shot below.

I used added 'public librar*' to ‘management’ for a second search resulting 1000 hits as depicted in the screen shot below.
.

The third search consisted of 'management' and 'public librar*' and 'staff'. This search resulted in 999 hits as depicted in the screen shot below.

This search turned up some interesting and unexpected results. I was quite surprised by the results of my search. My first search yielded less results than my final search. Normally applying more search terms would result in less hits. When I looked over the results, it seemed that my last two searches resulted in more hits from newspapers. I would normally be looking for magazine articles, so if I broke the results down by those found in magazines or journals the results reflected those I had experienced from past successive fraction searches. The number of hits decreased with each addition search term added. The first search resulted in 121 hits, the second in 22, and the third in 18 hits from magazine and journal articles.

I found two articles that would fit my information need.

TURNING OVER; BRITISH LIBRARIES HAVE BEEN FORCED TO RE-ASSESS THEIR FUNCTION IN SOCIETY, AND ARE NOW ENTERING A PERIOD OF TRANSITION,AND SOME ARERE-EMERGING AS 21ST CENTURY 'IDEA STORES'. SIMON KENT REPORTSPersonnel Today, October 7, 2003, FEATURE; Pg. 24, 1608 words, SIMON KENT

Competencies 6- World Cat- Browsing

Wold Cat

Compentcy 6- Library Literature-Citation Pearl

Library Literature

Citation Pearl.

Using the article, “Leading from the Middle” by Margaret Thomas, a citation pearl search was used to find like articles.

I used the subject of “Administration”, found in the subject of the citation, and the author’s name to find like titles.

I located the following six articles.

The search resulted in three more articles that addressed the information need of library management/administration. The 3 articles area as follows.

Using the citation information from the original article I was able to easily locate other articles that were equally valuable to my information need.

Module 3- Podcast

The podcast I selected is entitled Certified Public Library Administrators and can be located at
http://www.ala-apa.org/certification/cpla.mp3. This podcast is a production of ALA-PLA.

This podcast addresses the issues Librarians face when moving into administration positions including the fact that many have not had any training or experience with complex issues such as human resources and funding issues. The podcast reveals that many Library Directors require education in the field of management in order to perform thier duties well. It goes onto describe the Certified Public Library Administrators program in depth.

I located this podcast by searching Public Library Association podcasts using Yahoo.com.

Module 2 Blog Competency

I chose this site because it uses competencies as a basis for staff trainging. I thought this was interesting, since we are using comptencies in this class.

LibrarianInBlack.net at http://librarianinblack.typepad.com/librarianinblack/2006/10/il_2006_cultiva.html#comments

I found this blog by searching Google blogs.

Susan Houghton blogs about her presentation on using competencies to design employee training.

"How will competencies help?–job descriptions–evaluations–reveal training needs–address feelings of inequity–help staff adjust and handle change"

My focus is staff issues in public libraries. I had a tough time finding blogs that were aimed at staff issues or management issues, so I opted to go the training route.

I did however, think that it was a real shame that there do not seem to be library directors or library management out there discussing issues together that are specific to management and staff.
