Competencies 6- LexisNexis- Successive Fractions

LexisNexis

Successive Fractions

I chose to use LexisNexis for a successive fractions search. I chose the “power search’ and “natural language”.

I used the keyword of ‘management’ for my first search resulting in the 993 hits as depicted in the screen shot below.

I used added 'public librar*' to ‘management’ for a second search resulting 1000 hits as depicted in the screen shot below.
.

The third search consisted of 'management' and 'public librar*' and 'staff'. This search resulted in 999 hits as depicted in the screen shot below.

This search turned up some interesting and unexpected results. I was quite surprised by the results of my search. My first search yielded less results than my final search. Normally applying more search terms would result in less hits. When I looked over the results, it seemed that my last two searches resulted in more hits from newspapers. I would normally be looking for magazine articles, so if I broke the results down by those found in magazines or journals the results reflected those I had experienced from past successive fraction searches. The number of hits decreased with each addition search term added. The first search resulted in 121 hits, the second in 22, and the third in 18 hits from magazine and journal articles.

I found two articles that would fit my information need.
